Another road to nowhere

Opponents of the EU-Ukraine association agreement made up 61% of the voters who took part in the Dutch referendum. The turnout was 32%. That works out to 20% of the eligible voters opposing the agreement. Potentially, a powerful minority, but a minority still.

Geert Wilders’ logic is enigmatic. To fight radical Islam, destroy the EU. To destroy the EU, keep Ukraine out of it. Why?

Perhaps Wilders thinks that to defeat terrorists and political Islamists, the Netherlands should go it alone, leaving Germany to bleed her heart to death. I don’t think one can achieve anything in today’s Europe without winning support from at least a major block of the German public. Also, alienating Ukraine, a nation of 45 million people, most of them nominally Christian, is not a wise strategic move if your enemy is global Islamism.
