Mike Tyson is an embarrassment not to his race, of course, but to the American entertainment industry. His proponents in the show business must believe the “savage Negro” image still sells well and don’t mind pandering to viewers’ racist instincts. It’s not that straightforward, of course, but a lot of folks out there get comfort from seeing a black boxer behaving according to there stereotype of a black male (while other black males, in there opinion, are damn good at concealing their true nature).

I don’t know if he is indeed a monster or enjoys playing one; nor do I buy his tenuous rape conviction; nor do I deny that he may be a great boxer. Yet I suspect there is something Willie Horton-style about Tyson’s artificially sustained popularity.
