By the way, the great Russian poet I quoted yesterday, Alexander Pushkin, would have been considered a “person of color” in post-1865 Georgia, according to this 1889 article by Charles Chesnutt (I am linking to a Google cache because the oriiginal document seems to have been removed from the site of Berea College).
