Columbus Day — when was it, you say?

Always true to the Better Late than Never principle, I am dropping by only to say I’m glad Columbus did discover America for the rest of the world, primarily — why shy away from it? — for Europe. This is not to say that perpetrators of crimes against America’s native peoples were heroes — they were criminals; that importers of slaves acted within the mores of their times — they were criminals. But it also does not mean the US would not have developed economically without the massacres of Indians and the torment of black slaves. It would have, and would become a better place than it is now. If, indeed, it had managed to stay unblemished though the centuries, what a great symbol it would be of Western civilization, particularly, but not exclusively, its Anglophone subset.
