The article argues that European opinion makers have been focusing in the past few years on the Red Army’s and Red guerillas’ WWII excesses not only to deflect blame away from the Wehrmacht, but to recreate an image of Russia as an eternal enemy of the West. The other viable alternative for the Scary Other is the world of Islam, but it’s not so convenient. The author, Rabbi Avrom Shmulevich, lives in Hebron and describes himself as a “hyper-Zionist.”

[Added in 2019. Citing Shmulevich was a major blunder of judgement on my part. The man’s writings deserve to be ignored in their entirety.]
