Good news

First, John Cassian is back.

Second, Language Hat celebrated Nabokov’s birthday (April 22, 1899, Gregorian calendar) with a post on The Defense, or Zaschita Luzhina — the 1930 Nabokov novel that I am deeply fond of.

Third, both Hitler’s and Lenin’s birthdays have passed without my noticing anything unusual in the streets. Also, I don’t remember seeing a person in Moscow that I would identify as a skinhead but my colleagues tell me they have seen plenty. Even more, there are places in Moscow that one should avoid on April 20. I didn’t know that but should have expected that. In a city with a large native underclass (although its share must be far greater across the country) and large immigrant communities, skinheads are bound to flourish.
