The benefits of diversity have been much extolled in the American public scene, most importantly in its mainstream, middlebrow segment. Not so — for the past two or three decades as it seems — the benefits of homogeneity. Yet one hardly needs Aristotelian mental ability to hypothesize that in culturally and otherwise homogeneous societies the chance that (other things equal) democracy should get antagonistic to individual liberty is much lower than in heterogeneous ones. The problem with mentally testing this hypothesis is the tester would likely fit into none of the homogeneous groups under examination.
