False memories

Stories of Syrian protesters “spontaneously” gathering by the Danish embassy for a round of stone-throwing remind me of Soviet students throwing inkpots into the windows of the Chinese embassy. MGU (Moscow State University), my alma mater, is within a walking distance from the nicely located embassy of the PRC. There’s also a pond with swans nearby. In the spring of 196*, what better pastime could one imagine than sipping sweet wine upon the green by a swan lakelet while rubbing purple blots off one’s fingers? The wine would have been Tokai from Balaton or, more probably, Soviet portveyn

Still doesn’t make me wish I’d been born a decade or two earlier.
