Spats

Somewhere in The Corner, John Derbyshire asks readers to identify “spat sightings in literature”. At once, I thought of these lines:

…And mocked by hopeless longing to regain

Bank-holidays, and picture shows, and spats,

And going to the office in the train.

They come from a sonnet by Siegfried Sassoon, Dreamers — a rather grim WW1 poem.
