Tyler Green’s favorite painting in America is Pierre Bonnard’s The Open Window in the Phillips Collection. Based on the other Bonnards I have seen, I think I would enjoy that painting, too. Of US museums, I have only been to the Met, MoMa, Whitney and the National Gallery. Out of their collections, I’d probably pick a La Tour or a De Chirico.
My choice for the favorite American paiting, I am afraid, would be unoriginal — something by Hopper or Grant Wood or even Andrew Wyeth. Let’s say Dodges Ridge or November First or Wind from the Sea. But tempera and watercolor probably don’t count.
It would be great if I could honestly pick Whistler but I can’t.
